Jakarta (beritajatim.id) – The National Awakening Party (Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa, PKB) Deputy Chairman, Jazilul Fawaid, has commented on the potential for a single candidate and an empty box scenario in the upcoming Jakarta regional election.
“This is possible according to the constitution. It’s not prohibited, right?” Jazilul stated at the PKB headquarters in Jakarta on Friday (August 9, 2024).
However, he also mentioned that the party has yet to discuss further steps to prevent such a scenario in the Jakarta election.
“What is certain is that PKB will not take any steps that violate constitutional rules,” he emphasized.
Previously, the Secretary General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Hasto Kristiyanto, expressed concerns that democracy would be compromised if any party attempts to block citizens from participating in the 2024 regional election.
Hasto made this statement in response to media inquiries about rumors that the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) might abandon former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan in the 2024 Jakarta regional election.
“PDI-P will continue to ensure that the election process remains fair and that no party or individual is hindered, as every citizen has the constitutional right to be nominated,” Hasto said during an event at the National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta, on Thursday (August 8).
Meanwhile, PKS has opened the possibility of leaving Anies Baswedan and joining the Advanced Indonesia Coalition (KIM), which is expected to endorse Ridwan Kamil as a candidate for Jakarta Governor in the 2024 election.
PKS Spokesperson Muhammad Kholid noted that the party had initially prioritized Anies Baswedan and Sohibul Iman for the Jakarta election, hoping Anies could secure the remaining support needed from four seats in the Jakarta Regional Representative Council (DPRD).
“However, since the August 4 deadline has passed, PKS has begun communicating with all parties to ensure that we can participate in the election,” Kholid said in a message received in Jakarta on Thursday (August 8, 2024). (hdl)
